Andy Knepler WA5UP
Clarksville, Tennessee February 2006

I am originally from Illinois, and I was licensed as KB9YKG in 2000 after passing the Technician exam. It was another four years before I finally broke down and learned CW, and upgraded to a General class ticket. We moved to Plano, Texas in 2007, and I upgraded to Extra (lite according to the old-timers) in 2009. Since I'm in '5 land' now, I thought it was time to update the callsign as well, so I now hold the vanity call WA5UP.

I have been interested in electronics and radio my entire life. I currently serve as the Director of Public Relations for the Plano Amateur Radio Klub, and also as a member of the club's technical committee. I have served on the repeater committees of two other clubs, and have worked extensively on amateur and commercial, repeater systems, which I enjoy very much. Aside from repeaters, I enjoy working the HF bands when conditions allow, and I am also working with other hams to build a 2.4GHz HSMM network in the North Dallas area. When I travel I also enjoy bringing my gear with me and working portable from parks or hotel rooms.

In addition to the extra ticket, I also hold a General Radiotelephone Operator License, as well as a CET certificate from the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians. My professional background is in cellular, where I have worked as both a field technician, and as an RF engineer. I currently work for LG Electronics, doing pre-production mobile device testing.  I travel some, but spend most of my time here in the DFW area, testing and working with the device acceptance groups from various wireless carriers.  My job mostly consists of data collection and analysis, so this hobby is a great way for me to get back to 'real radio', which I often miss at work.

I married my wife Crystal, KB9ZHK, in November of 2002. We have moved several times since we were married, but we hope to stay here in Plano for a while. In my spare time I enjoy electronics tinkering, prototyping, and mentoring. I love to meet new people who enjoy this hobby, so give me a call on the PARK machine or drop me a message anytime!
